Creativity

When I talk with someone about creativity and creative writing, I often hear: “I’m not creative,” or “I’m not good at painting, writing, …,” “I received bad grades in art, German, English, ….” But being creative is not about judging what we create. While in our personal lives creativity sometimes is about the “product” as the result of being creative, like when we want to give what we created to someone as a gift, there is so much more that being creative can offer to us, such as feeling more balanced, relaxing or gaining new insights, sharing, talking about, and reflecting on what we have created, documenting inner processes for personal growth. Trying out different media and finding something that suits your own way - that’s what I’d like to support you in, to be creative together.

I, too, thought I was “not good” in my creative expression, at painting, at writing, until I began to free myself from judgment. I felt a pull to being creative and wanted to let go of thoughts about how “good” or “not so good” I was doing. I wanted to focus on the doing only and simply let go. Through this, I learned to feel more free from judgment in general and to let go of either-or-thinking. That’s when I started improvising on the piano, writing creatively, painting, and taking photos. I enjoy the creative process, the feeling of freedom. Whether I do something with the result—and if so, what—is another matter. Everything that emerges creatively can be further refined, yet it doesn’t need to be.

Through my workshops and collaborative creative activities, I want to encourage people to free themselves from limiting thoughts, and to explore, without judgment, what draws us to creativity: Whether it is painting, designing, writing, photography, photo editing, making music, creative cooking—whatever it is that inspires us, incites our joy in life, calms us, or energizes us. Trying things out, immersing ourselves in the process, letting emerging thoughts and judgments drift away, being fully present in the creative moment—so much is possible when we choose to do so.
